Yerba Mate Benefits: What the Science Actually Says
Around 80 mg of caffeine a cup, plus a group of plant compounds coffee does not have. Here is what that means, without the miracle claims.

Ask an Argentine why they drink yerba mate and the answer will not be about antioxidants. It is what you have in the morning, at your desk, on a bench in the park, passed from hand to hand around a circle of friends. The health question came later and mostly from outside South America, and it deserves a straight answer: there is real research on yerba mate, some of it genuinely interesting, and a lot of it thinner than the internet suggests.
Here is what is actually in the gourd, what the evidence supports so far, and what it does not.
What is actually in a gourd
Yerba mate is the dried and toasted leaf of Ilex paraguariensis, a species of holly that grows in the subtropical northeast of Argentina and across the border into Paraguay and southern Brazil. Steeped in hot water, it gives you four things worth naming:
- Caffeine, around 80 mg in a cup, which puts a mate in the same neighbourhood as a cup of coffee. The exact figure moves with how much yerba you use and how many refills you go through.
- Theobromine, the same mild stimulant that gives dark chocolate its lift. It is gentler and longer-acting than caffeine.
- Polyphenols, mainly caffeoylquinic acids, the same family of plant antioxidants found in coffee and green tea.
- Saponins, the compounds behind the foam on the first pour and a good part of the bitterness.
The caffeine, and why it feels different
Most people who switch from coffee to mate describe the same thing: alert without the edge, and no crash in the early afternoon. There is a plain explanation that has nothing to do with a special kind of caffeine. Caffeine is caffeine. What changes is the delivery. A coffee arrives in three minutes; a gourd of mate is refilled over an hour or two, so the same total dose comes in small waves instead of one hit. The theobromine alongside it stretches the effect further.
The practical consequence: mate is easy to underestimate. Five or six rounds in the afternoon can keep you up at midnight. If you are sensitive to caffeine, treat a full gourd as two coffees, not one.
What the research supports so far
The most consistent findings are the ones about antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. That is where mate has the strongest signal, and it is not surprising: it is a leaf infusion with a high polyphenol content, in the same category as green tea.
Beyond that, the picture gets blurrier. There are human studies pointing at effects on blood lipids, blood sugar markers and body weight, and a 2025 review of the field found them genuinely limited: small groups of people, short trials, different preparations at different doses, and not much control for what else the participants were eating and doing. That is not a reason to dismiss the results. It is a reason not to read them as settled.
So the honest version is this. Mate gives you caffeine and a real dose of plant polyphenols in a drink with no sugar and no calories to speak of. Whether it does more than that for your cholesterol or your waistline is an open question that the current studies cannot close.
What it will not do
It is not a weight loss product, it will not detox anything, and it does not replace anything your doctor told you. If you are pregnant, on medication, or sensitive to caffeine, the caffeine content alone is reason enough to ask a professional first rather than a blog.
One practical note that matters more than any of the above: do not drink it scalding. Tradition puts the water at 70 to 80 degrees, well below boiling, and there are good reasons for that beyond flavour. Water off the boil also burns the leaves and turns the whole gourd bitter within two refills.
How to actually drink it
The ritual is simpler than it looks, and getting it right is the difference between a drink you enjoy and a bitter cup you never repeat. We wrote the full method, from curing a new gourd to keeping the flavour alive across refills, in how to prepare yerba mate.
If you are starting from zero, the Playadito starter box has the gourd, the bombilla and a kilo of yerba together, which saves you guessing at three separate purchases. If you already have the gear, our yerba mate shelf carries Playadito, Taragüi, Canarias and Rosamonte, shipped from Amsterdam across the Netherlands, Europe, the UK and the US.
